Birthday Before Finals

Yesterday was a busy and happy day.

Normally, having my birthday the last week of classes has not been fun. As an English major(s), most of my final projects and essays are due right before finals week, making that last weekend before classes end pretty stressful.

That was true this year, naturally, because neither my birthday nor the college semester schedule has changed. But I had a really good birthday this year, as in the best ever.

My friend invited me over to spend a couple hours over lunch together. When I got there, I learned that she invited two other friends over to have a low-key surprise party. She made dinosaur nuggets and a cake and we played a card game together.

It was wonderful. I had a great time, and I felt so special and so very loved.

And I know the next part doesn’t sound so exciting, but I also got vaccinated yesterday. I have been so excited to get vaccinated, to participate in the hopeful part of this historical moment.

I especially wanted to get the shot on birthday so that someday I will have the opportunity to tell my grandkids that I got mass-vaccinated in an abandoned makeup store next to the Red Robin on my birthday. I want them to think that I have truly lost it.

It was also funny to see the look on the registration worker when she wrote down my birth date and the vaccination date, pause, look at at me, and say, “Happy birthday?”

I guess she has a different idea of what celebrating looks like than I do.

The rest of the weekend, I spent with family — going to the bookstore and dinner with my parents, spending time with my siblings and nephews after church (which I accidentally slept through because of my vaccination side effects).

I didn’t expect to enjoy my birthday very much this year because of school stress, so I’m extra thankful for the time I got to have with my close friends and family. My time this weekend reminded me how much I am loved.
